Photo-Eye Sensor Alignment or Replacement: preparing for the visit

The door will only go down while a finger stays on the wall button; let go and it stops or reverses. From the remote it opens fine but never closes, so someone has to stand in the garage every time.

Worth answering before the call

Is there frost, snow, slush or salt around the sensors in winter? Does it happen at all hours, or mainly on bright mornings or late afternoons? Can you send photographs of both sensors, the head unit label and the wall control?

How do I test the sensors each month?

Start the door closing and, while it is moving, swing a broom handle through the beam low across the opening; the door should halt and travel back up. Next, put a 2x4 flat beneath the door's centre and run the door onto it; it should back off as soon as it touches. If either test fails, close the door first if you can, use it by hand with the manual release, and book a visit; do not release it if it feels heavy.

Will my phone app or hub still work after the sensors are changed?

Yes. The sensors are wired to the head unit, and the app or hub simply talks to that unit, so nothing about the connection changes. What you will notice is the fault code clearing: apps that reported the sensors as obstructed or not aligned show the door as ready to close again. If an app or hub still holds an old code after the work, refreshing it or cycling the door from the app once clears it.
