Repair & Maintenance
My opener is old and has no photo eyes. Can it still be inspected?
Yes. Older openers rely on contact reversal alone, so the board test carries more weight and is run carefully against the maker's procedure, along with the manual balance check, the force setting and the release. The report records what the opener has and how it performed. An opener built before photo eyes became standard is flagged for replacement in the report, since makers recommend moving off that generation of opener rather than treating photo eyes as a nice-to-have. My door has a lock bar. Should it be used with an opener?
Not while the opener is connected. If the slide lock is engaged and someone presses the remote, the opener pulls against a locked door and can bend the top section or strip its gear. On a door driven by an opener the lock is usually disabled or removed during a tune-up, and the opener's own hold on the door provides the security. If you want a manual lock for holidays, the technician can show you how to use it safely with the opener unplugged. Garage Door Tune-Up
I only tapped the door with the bumper. Why is it off its track?
A sectional door is strong in the direction it travels and surprisingly easy to push sideways at a single roller. A light nudge on the bottom section can flex the track lip enough for the roller to slip out, after which the section twists and the rollers above follow. The good news is that this kind of event usually leaves the cables and springs alone, so the reset is often rollers, a re-formed track lip and a hinge check. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What information or photos help before the visit?
A photograph of the whole door from outside, a close-up of the damaged section, a picture of the manufacturer's label if you can find it, and a shot of the inside of the door showing the hinges, tracks and springs. Add the door's approximate width and height, whether it is insulated, its colour and panel style, and how the damage happened. That set often lets the technician confirm availability before arriving. Can worn rollers make the door come off its track?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to replace them before they fail. A wheel worn oval, a bent stem, or a short stem sitting loose in a double hinge lets a section drift until the wheel climbs onto the track lip; from there a bump or a gust can carry it out entirely. A door hanging crooked is a far larger repair than a set of rollers. Fresh, correctly sized rollers seated in a squared track are what keep the door where it belongs. Garage Door Roller Replacement
The screws spin in their holes. Can the hinge still be fitted securely?
Yes. A stripped hole is common on older steel doors and on wood doors where the timber has softened. The technician either shifts the hinge to fresh metal within the stile, uses a larger self-drilling screw that cuts new threads, or drills through and fits a bolt with a nut and washer or a backer plate on the inside. Any of these gives the new hinge a firmer anchor than the original screws had. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Can a bent garage door track be straightened, or does it need replacing?
Both happen, and the damage decides. A shallow dent in the vertical run away from the curve is usually dressed back to shape with track pliers or a block, and a channel that has spread can be squeezed closed. A kink, a crack, a bend in the curved piece or steel thinned by rust is replaced with a matching section, because a hard spot in the roller path keeps catching however carefully it is worked. Is cable work different on a door with extension springs?
The idea is the same and the route is different. Instead of winding onto a drum, the cable runs from the bottom bracket up over a pulley at the front of the track, back over a pulley on the spring, and to an adjusting clip. The technician relaxes the springs by opening and clamping the door, replaces worn pulleys along with the cable, sets both clips the same, and confirms a containment cable runs through each spring. Openers & Access
Why does my garage door open by itself?
A door that opens with nobody pressing anything is usually being told to by a fault in its wiring or a control. A pinched or stapled wire to the wall control can short intermittently and act like a button press; a stuck button on a remote left in a coat pocket does the same; and a neighbour's remote on an old fixed-code opener can occasionally trigger it. The technician isolates each control in turn until the phantom command stops. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
My opener is decades old. Can the chain drive still be repaired?
Often, yes. Gear kits, sprockets, chains and trolleys are still made for many older heads, and tension, phase and limits can be set on almost any unit. The limit is parts: some makers no longer support units made before the mid-1990s, and those also lack the photo-eye protection expected today. The technician checks parts availability for your model and lays out repair beside renewal so you can decide with the facts. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
I pulled the red cord during a power cut. Could that have caused this?
It can, if the door was open or out of balance when it was released. The release itself disconnects the trolley from the belt, so a falling door does not throw its weight onto the drive; the real risk is the door itself crashing down and damaging the tracks, hinges or panels. Nothing about the cord itself is harmful; it is designed to be used. The habit to keep is to release the door only when it is closed. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Do I need an electrician for a new opener?
Only when the receptacle is missing or badly placed. The head unit needs a grounded outlet it can reach with its own cord, and a permanent extension cord is not the answer. If one must be added or relocated, that is wiring work for a qualified electrical contractor, arranged separately from the opener visit. Booking that ahead means the opener goes in without a delay caused by waiting on power. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
How is the old door removed?
Technicians disconnect the operator, stabilize the assembly and control the spring system before detaching cables or high-tension fixtures. Sections are supported and separated in sequence, followed by track and related hardware. The agreed scope states whether removed materials are taken away, while site protection keeps nearby finishes and belongings clear during dismantling. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
How do I operate the door during a power outage?
At handover, the installer demonstrates the operator's emergency release and the safe handle or gripping point for manual movement. The exact sequence follows the operator instructions. Once released, a balanced door can be raised and lowered by hand with controlled effort. Reconnection is also shown, and remotes are kept aside until the mechanism is properly engaged again. What information should I provide before the visit?
Share the finished opening size if known, photos from inside and outside, any door labels, renovation drawings, permit notes, design pressure, and details about recent wind movement or damage. Mention windows, insulation, ceiling obstructions, and the existing opener. These details help the technician prepare a focused survey while measurements and mounting conditions are still verified on site. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Will my current garage door opener stay in place?
That depends on its supported door size and weight, rail arrangement, condition, controls and safety features. The assessment compares its product information with the selected door and checks whether the attachment can be reinforced correctly. When it remains, travel and force are reset for the new balanced assembly. Any opener change is identified separately in the planned scope. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
